Fulton County Schools may redraw zones for six Roswell-area schools. The elementary survey is open until Oct. 21; first draft maps come Nov. 9 and Nov. 11.

Fulton County Schools may redraw the attendance zones of six schools that serve Roswell. The first two public forums were held Oct. 7 at Centennial High School, for middle schools, and Oct. 13 at Roswell High School, for elementary schools. The first draft maps come next, on Nov. 9 and Nov. 11.

Updated Oct. 16: Both first forums have been held. The district has posted a recorded presentation from the elementary forum, and its feedback survey is open through Wednesday, Oct. 21. The survey for the middle school forum closed Oct. 14. No zone changes, closures or consolidations have been approved, the district said.

The district’s Sept. 28 announcement lists eight schools north of the Chattahoochee River that “may be directly affected.” Six of them serve Roswell neighborhoods. Holcomb Bridge Middle, at 2700 Holcomb Bridge Road, has an Alpharetta mailing address; the other five have Roswell addresses.

The district’s forum flyer says why. “As enrollment continues to decline,” the district must deal with “underused facilities,” balance capacity and match resources to projected enrollment. It quotes School Board policy: where an area is underused and nearby schools have room, schools there “may be considered for closure, consolidation, or repurposing.”

The district also said no final decisions have been made on zone changes, closures or consolidations.

Which schools are on the list

A slide shown to the School Board on Sept. 10, in the district’s Region C capacity presentation, marks each school for a “potential gain” or a “potential loss.” The slide does not say what would be gained or lost.

School Marked for
Esther Jackson Elementary Potential gain
Hembree Springs Elementary Potential gain
Mimosa Elementary Potential loss
Vickery Mill Elementary Potential gain and loss
Elkins Pointe Middle Potential gain
Holcomb Bridge Middle Potential gain and loss

Mimosa is the only school on the whole list marked for a loss alone. Two schools outside Roswell are also on it: Haynes Bridge Middle in Alpharetta, about five miles north, and Autrey Mill Middle in Johns Creek, about eight miles east. Both are marked for a gain and Haynes Bridge for a loss as well.

The same presentation forecasts 17,221 elementary students and 8,710 middle school students in the region in the 2030-31 school year.

Attendance zones do not follow city limits. A Roswell family zoned for a school that is not on this list could still see its zone move as neighboring boundaries shift.

How the board decides

The flyer quotes the board’s policy. The primary criteria are:

  • distance traveled to school
  • instructional capacity, including rooms for ESOL, special education and gifted programs
  • projected enrollment

When those leave more than one option, the board weighs traffic patterns, special programs, whether a neighborhood was rezoned in the past three years and keeping elementary, middle and high school zones lined up.
